Email Client Setup for GAR Email

Using POP3 for your incoming port will download all emails to your email client which will make them available off-line and uses a minimal amount of GAR’s available storage. Whereas IMAP will store the email on the server and your client will sync with the server when you’re online.

Because of our limited storage, IMAP is not recommended unless you’ll be using multiple email clients (i.e. both a phone and a tablet/PC). In that case set up the client on your tablet/PC as POP3 and your phone as IMAP. This will allow you to read and make quick replies on your phone but download the emails to your email client using POP3.

  • Typically, when setting up a client for POP3, downloaded emails will be deleted from the server after a specified length of time, thereby using a minimal amount of server storage.
  • If you set up your phone to BCC yourself, both incoming emails and your replies will download to your email client.

Choose an incoming port

Based on your decision to use POP or IMAP, choose the corresponding port number below. A secure transport is recommended.

  • IMAP | Port 993 (Secure Transport   — SSL function enabled)
  • POP3 | Port 995 (Secure Transport   — SSL function enabled)
  • IMAP | Port 143 (Insecure Transport — No SSL function enabled)
  • POP3 | Port 110 (Insecure Transport — No SSL function enabled)

Choose an outgoing SMTP port

Recommended outgoing ports

  • SMTP | Port 465 (Secure Transport — SSL function enabled)
  • SMTP | Port 587 (Insecure Transport, but can be upgraded to a secure connection using STARTTLS)
This will also work but is NOT recommended
  • SMTP | Port 25 (Outdated and not recommended. username/password authentication MUST be enabled if using this port.)
