GAR Summer Camp!

GAR is offering 3 one week summer camp sessions this summer. These sessions are open to children in grades 6-12 and they do not need to have any previous rowing experience but should be comfortable around water. Each session will be divided by age group when possible and a child can take more than one session to further their skill development. Rowing is not a sport that needs to be started when a child is young so if you have a high schooler who wants to try something new and fun, we have a seat for them too! If you have a middle or high school student who is very petite we can also train them to be a coxswain. Coxswains are the brains behind the brawn and they steer the boats and help rowers with their technique and timing. We would love to have some potential coxswains come to our camp too, we will teach them all they need to know!

GAR stands for Gainesville Area Rowing and we are a club rowing team for middle school and high school students. We have a fall and spring season each school year. Our middle school program offers students 3 practices per week and a few fun races each season. Our high school program is a competitive program that practices five days per week and races 5-6 times per season. Our team is like a huge family with supportive and very positive coaches, great children who are supportive of each other and work hard, and parents who volunteer and really make our club successful. Anyone can learn to row regardless of their athletic experience, if you provide a child who is interested and excited, we can do the rest! Even juniors and seniors in high school can join our team and be successful, attitude is everything!

Camp Location: Melrose Bay Park, Melrose FL

Located just 15 min from Gainesville, this beautiful park allows GAR boat storage and access to Melrose Bay and Lake Santa Fe. This is a temporary location for us as our water levels are too low to use Newnan’s Lake, where our facility is located. To get to Melrose Bay Park, take 26 out to Melrose and turn left down either Quail St. or Trout St. and then you will go onto Devonia St. (If you took Quail, you will run into the beach park). If you turn left on Trout St. instead of Quail, turn left on Devonia and the park will be on your right. You can stay at the park during camp to swim, kayak, or relax or shop in Melrose and support the community who has been so terrific to GAR this year. Melrose Bay Park is a little piece of heaven!

Learn-To-Row

At long last the next GAR Learn to Row class is coming up! The class will be held Friday May 18^th from 6-8 pm and Saturday May 19^th between 9 am and 5 pm. This class is a little different than past learn to rows, mainly because we are now rowing in Melrose on Lake Santa Fe due to the low water conditions on Newnan’s Lake in Gainesville, which is where our boathouse facility is located. The town of Melrose has been very welcoming to us and hopefully several of our new rowers will be residents of Melrose!

The Friday session will be at our Gainesville boathouse and will feature a land-based instructional workout on the “ergometer” or rowing machine to learn basic techniques and will also feature an introduction to the boats and the terms used in the sport of rowing. The class will continue the following day in Melrose, where we will launch in beautiful Melrose Bay and learn to scull. You will be paired with experienced rowers and will row in four person boats (“quads”) and be accompanied by a professional US Rowing certified coach.

The Saturday session will take about three hours and due to our space limitations will be held in increments throughout the day, such as 9-12 and 1-4. When registration is complete you will be notified of your slot and given directions to each venue. In order to ensure a quality experience it’s very important to match rowers with their boat and assign people in advance.

The deadline for registration is May 15^th and payment must be made at the time of registration (no refunds will be made after this date unless weather is an issue. Money can be credited toward a future learn to row or the summer novice program). You are not considered registered until you have paid. The cost for the class is $50 and can be used as a credit towards participation in our summer novice rowing program or club dues should you decide to join our master’s team. Registration will close after 24 slots have been paid, although you can sign up on a new waiting list for a future learn to row.

Results of the Rummage Sale on March 3

With apologies for the lateness of this report, the link for the detail report of member credit for rummage sales is below. The initial plan for credit against your fundraising requirements was for one share of the total for donating goods for sale and one for helping with the event. Because we had a number of rowers and families make extra effort and show extra generosity in their contributions we thought it only fitting to give our some extra credit where due. Based on the information from the event and the days in preparation, the amounts in the credit column were applied against your fundraising requirements for the season.
